The crooked staircase leading up takes you to the yard that contains the prisoners only contact with fresh outside air.

With San Francisco just across the bay, the sites and sounds would float across the water reminding the prisoners of all they were missing.

This island of confinement offers many photo shots that will surprise anyone who visits.

You can see the guard tower at Alcatraz that was always occupied by watchful eyes.

Many people don't know that while Alcatraz served as a prison to some of America's most dangerous criminals, the guards who watched over them also lived on the island.

The guards even had their families with them. Playgrounds, sounds of families laughing could float up on the air into the cells and remind the prisoners that there was still life out there.
