Some things people don't know about prison if you haven't been there– mostly, the weight we carry. Prisoners carry so many intangibles holding real tangible weight on our minds, bodies and spirits: Regret, anxiety, longing, loses, blame, fear, vulnerabilities, memories.

Even if your incarceration isn't in the middle of a battle-ground, there's still a level of uncomfortability you have to quickly get comfortable with. Like sleeping every night with a shield and sword (figuratively speaking). That armor you get to drop to the floor after unlocking your front door and stepping into the house after a long day; we carry it 24-7.

After all this time I'm starting to understand that getting reintegrated back into civilization is just as important as leaving prison. Phasing out of the ”incarcerated” mindset is a step I'm looking to take through this pen pal service. Building new genuine friendships with new people from all over the world interested in getting to know the man I am today, is . . . surreal. Talk to me, I talk back.
